Before & After's @ V-Magazine

V Magazine had photographers Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin shoot 34 of the top models to date. Everyone from Shalom Harlow to Natasha Poly. Only a small batch of the photo's are available for view right now, you can see the complete collection by click on the image below. Of coarse I love the photo of Christy and Snejana. Sadly Hillary Rhoda's photo has not been released yet. I must say the both Christy and Nejana look better not made up!

Givenchy Crossed the Atlantic

Hubert de Givenchy's inspiration has left the Paris resort collections and landed at Oscar de la Renta's Resort 2007 collection in New York. While de la Renta favored last seasons black and white palette, this season it was his shocking color looks that jumped. The tailoring and overall silhouette can be attributed to classic Givenchy from the 50's and even 60's.

The highlight of Oscar de la Renta's resort collection, the prints! Oscar showed a large number of different prints and in a wide selections of themes. From geometric prints in black and white to soft floral prints on pale tangerine silk chiffon or pale pink silk organdy. On a side note, if I see one more ruffle next season I am going pound the floor like a little kid. My favorite pick from the collection is a sleeveless floor length a-line tangerine silk taffeta gown. Stunning. I am actually liking this move toward classic lines and clean fabrics.

Shocker: Isabella Blow Dies

Fashion Icon, Stylist, Editor, Visionary and Muse, Isabella Delves Broughton Blow died yesterday, May 6th, 2007 of cancer, according to her husband Detmar Blow’s spokesperson. Last year Isabella suffered injuries from a fall and was absent from the fashion world briefly. Blow’s husband has commented in the past that she had suffered from depression, but this cancer news makes more sense. The passing of Isabella Blow is a great loss for the Fashion World! She was one of the greatest fashion visionaries of the last 30 years. We don’t have to mention the names of the countless number of today’s designers that were blessed with the friendship or the creative mentorship of Isabella Blow. There will be a big bruise on the Spring/Summer 2008 runways of London, Paris and Milan. With love for Isabella Blow

Pat Buckley (1926-2007)

An end of an great Era is coming, On Sunday, April 15th, 2007 socialite and humanitarian Pat Buckley died of septic poisoning following a vascular operation on her left leg. She passed away at her home in Stamford, Connecticut. She is survived by her husband William f. Buckley, their son Christopher and two grand children. She is one the great style muses of the twenty century and a faithful couture client to the likes of Pierre Cardin, Yves St. Laurent and Hubert di Givenchy and American master Bill Blass. Her closest and best friends include the late Nan Kempner and C.Z Guest as well as Nancy Kissenger, Nancy Reagan, Betsy Blomingdale, Annette De la Renta, Mica Ertegun and Judy Peabody. She will be missed but her legacy will live on not only through her family but the strong presence she's left behind in the world of fashion and culture. Most certainly her couture closet will be making its way to the MET Costume Institute since she along with Nan Kempner chaired the board at the MET for over 3 decades. The End of Slim Slimane Era

Miles Socha at WWD reported today that Dior Homme is ending their contract with designer Hedi Slimane. Dior executives have chosen Belgian designer Kris Van Assche as his replacement. Van Assche has worked with Hedi Slimane previously at Dior Homme and Yves Saint Laurent. His namesake collection premiered at Paris Fall/Winter 2005 collections. While his first collection was widely praised his last two collections have struggled to please the critics, including myself.

Although I am happy to see Slimane go, the innovation of the Womens line was never shared with Slimane, He tended to keep to his signature look and not shape the line by Dior’s standard. That skinny leg pant is slowing disappearing but Slimane won’t give up a good thing. Hopefully his own label will give him the freedom he needs. Fingers crossed for Van Assche!

Weinstein Bros. to buy Halston

Brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein are getting into the fashion business. WWD reported this afternoon that the Weinstein Company is joining forces with Hilco Consumer Capital to purchase the Halston Brand. Is Mr. Weinstein purchasing the brand for his girlfriend Georgina Chapman to take over and become its new creative director? Well, maybe it does take a woman to revive the brand. Just look at the designers who’ve attempted a revival of this iconic brand. Randolph Duke, Kevan Hall, Craig Natiello and Piyawat only lasted two seasons or less. That’s barely a year! Designer Bradley Bayou took over in late 2002. He was able to last 4 seasons with the brand before he was handed his own label. The clothing arm of the brand has not seen the success it once inhabited since the 70’s. Could Georgina be the answer, she does have impeccable sense for draping.

St. Laurent Falls Outside Champs Boutique

Designer Yves Saint Laurent collapsed outside his Paris Boutique and Atelier on Friday. The designer has had medical problems the last 15 years. The news broke in Paris and the Evening Standard in London had this to say about the designer. So many unrelated statements were made about the designer in the article. While I hope Monsieur Saint Laurent recovers, I fell on the floor laughing when I read this statement by the Evening Standard:

"It follows increasing concerns about the multi-millionaire's health after a lifetime of high living involving drink, drugs and numerous glamorous girlfriends."

I hate it when journalists write about things they have no idea about, spell checkers miss easy words and fact checkers don't do their job! Then again one could easily say this is all apart of the propaganda wheel to paint homosexuals as straights. I'd rather they just keep the girlfriend comment out entirely.

I won't post that nasty picture out of respect to Monsieur Saint Laurent! We wish you a speedy recovery - Love the Blog World!!!!

Goodbye ROCHAS, Hello RICCI . . . . .

WWD reported this morning that Oliver Theyskens is in the process of signing a contract with the House of Nina Ricci. Earlier this month Ricci designer Lars Nilsson handed in his resignation as creative director. Currently Nilsson is in talks of permanently returning to New York, no further details have become available regarding the deal. Although WWD reported “Oscar de la Renta executives have denied that Nilsson is joining the company.” Previously Nilsson was the creative director for Bill Blass from 2000-2003 until he was fired.

This is great news for Theyskens, while he is not getting his own label. The post at Nina Ricci is not a far jump (in terms of design) for the designer. This will give Olivier more time to build his skills as well as his following. According WWD the design team at Nina Ricci will continue work on the S/S 07’ collection, although there will be no for show of the collection. Theyskens will take over reigns of the F/W 07 collection, which will show next March. See everything works out in the end!

Is Christy the Hope We've Been Waiting For. . . . .

Is this the end of Actors and celebrities on the covers of magazines and heading multi-million dollar ad campaigns?

Hello Magazine captured Christy Turlington on the streets of New York City, shooting a new ad campaign for Maybelline. Christy’s contract with the cosmetic giant expired in 1998, although her ads ran until 2001. Maybelline is known to be faithful to the model industry by only using one celebrity at a time (currently Kristin Davis). Compared to it competitor Revlon, who knocked models off it's campaigns in the 90's for Melanie Griffiths, Selma Hayek, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore and Eva Mendes.

Another big blow to the celebrity headed ad campaigns, Designer Donatella Versace sacked Demi Moore, Halle Berry and Madonna for her Fall Campaign. At A Socialites Life, we got word that Donatella has brought back Versace Icon’s Christy Turlington, Carolyn Murphy and Kate Moss to join newcomers Daria Werbowy & Angela Lindvall. Now that’s going to be a smokin’ Ad Campaign. No word still as to who will be shooting the campaign. Rumor has it though it’s all being shot in a studio in New York. Keep in mind there was no “City” after the “NY” – Irving Penn’s studio is in the state of New York! But Penn is turning 89 next month. WOW!!!!! Amazing!

Bravo Maybelline & Versace, I hope this will fuel change in the industry and push the celebrities out and focus on the models again. This means that the modeling industry need to make another movement toward unique looking models and no more cookie cutters (i.e. all baby doll faces or all Brazilian’s). Maybe She's Born With It?

Sanders Struggle Enters New Chapter

WWD Reports that the Prada Group is selling Jil Sander brand to Change Capital Partners. This news comes only days after designer Raf Simons shows his first women's collection for the Sander brand. Over the past 5 years since Jil Sander herself left her her namesake and sold the controlling interest to the Prada Group. The Milan based label has struggled to find a successful successor to Sander herself. Things were so bad that Prada even paid Sanders to return to her post, which only last two seasons due to contract disputes. Interestingly enough, the current head designer, Raf Simons. Has really started to get a grasp of the label and won critics and buyers with his recent men's and women's shows for Fall.

Project Runway - NY Fashion Week Shows

So with one episode left of the Project Runway before the final 3 have chossen. The secrets were kept tight this season, filming was to complete in early September of last year. Then came the knews during production that NY Fashion Week was being rescheduled for the Fall shows. So due to the time constraint, producers showed the final 4 designers. So those attending the Bryant Park Fashion show don't know who the final 3 are - keeping the integrity of the final episode. I didn't think Kara's was the best.

Rumor has it that Chloe is not in the final 3! Judging from her frown while introducing her collection, compared to Daniel, Satino & Kara's all smiles, maybe it's true.

Over at the MADE IN BRAZIL blog, they had friend with a video camera at the show - enjoy the fotage - View It Here

Asian or Italian Model Invasion?

Amy at Seamsters and I have been going back forth about a possible Asian flux of models hitting the fashion capitals runways. Amy noticed, like I have the increase of Asian models being casted last season. The two regulars over that last two seasons are Ai Tominaga (Left) and Du Juan (Right) along with American Anne Watanabe. As much as I would love to see an Asian Wave of models, I don’t think we are there just yet.

The fashion industry is all about change and that goes for the models in the industry as well. In the last 15 years we've seen several waves of models. Starting with “The Supermodels” (Turlington, Evangelista, Auermann), then “The Waifs” (lead by Moss, Valetta & Harlow), “The English Wave” (Tennent, O'Connor, Kidd and Ellison), “The Eastern Blocks” (Klum, Herzigova & Pestova) then “The Brazilians” (Bundchen, Alves & Fontana) and today we are on the cusp of “The Little Dolls” (Gemma Ward, Lily Cole, Jessica Stam & Natalia Vodianova)

So what is next? Will it be an Asian invasion? To be honest, last season in Paris the bulk of the new faces during castings in Paris were a lot of Italian faces. Following suit with the recently platinum Maria Carla Boscono. All eyes will be on NYC on Friday to see is the change if underway or if the regulars will grace the runways.

Thanks Amy for the banter!

Giannini Takes Gucci Mens, Ray Out

WWD reports that Gucci Menswear designer John Ray has handed in his resignation as design director. Claiming his decision is based on personal reasons. Gucci Group will announce today that Womenswear designer Frida Giannini will take over as the menswear director post. This is a familiar situation for the Gucci Group. Giannini replaced Alessandra Facchinetti in 2004 after several poorly reviewed collections.

Giannini’s first womenswear collection for Gucci was met with mixed reviews. Although in the last two season’s she has really out shined her predecessors. As for designer John Ray, his first collection for Gucci premiered Spring 2005. The designer received rave reviews for his first collection. His second collection would not be so positive, the designer opted to play safe and mimic the Ford/Gucci style created 4 years earlier. The last two seasons Ray’s collection seemed to have a lost vision and a lack of classic Gucci style. Hopefully Ray will go on to create his own namesake collection.

Galliano Gets Second Collection

John Galliano is fallowing in the business footsteps of McQueen and McCartney who recently started their second ready to wear collection. Galliano has signed a license deal with IT Holding SpA to create a second women’s ready to wear line. IT Holding also has licensing deals with Just Cavalli and Versace Jeans. Last year they lost their most successful contract with Dolce & Gabbana for their D&G line. No further details of how large the collection will be or when it will be released. Fingers crossed that the deal will include both women’s and menswear.

Whose that Blond?

Italian vixen and fashion model Mariacarla Boscono made a startling appearence yesterday at the Valentino Couture Spring show in Paris. The model has been MIA for the past 3 months and has graced the catwalks with a completely new look. She chopped off her signature jet black mane and now sports a Asymetrical haircut reminisent of Garrin cut. To top off the this new look she has bleached her hair blond as well as her eyebrows. I think this will need some getting use too.

PETA Needs to Layoff

It's the holiday season and it's the time for friends, family, love, giving and plain ol'Merry Cheer. Well it seems as though PETA can't leave well enough alone. Last week at a big charity dinner, attended by major fashion industry player. PETA staged a protest in the men's and women's bathrooms. Placing stickers inside of urinals and toilets with a photo of Anna on top of target. Then earlier this week, PETA members received the NYC chapters Xmas Card.....A cartoon of Anna and a comment about her need for fur. Really tasteless, Even at Christmas they won't give up!

Kal Ruttenstein - Young at Heart

The buying world in fashion has lost one of its driving forces on Tuesday. Kal Ruttenstein buyer and Senior VP at Bloomingdales passed away earlier this week after battling cancer. Kal is most certainly one of the most strong presence buyer in the industry. For almost 30 years his driven Bloomingdale's through its good times and bad. Joining the company in 1977, he ushered the retailer into high fashion in the early 80's. Befriending numerous icons of the fashion world along the way. From Diane Von Furstenberg, the late Perry Ellis and Halston and was instrumental of launching such designers as Anna Sui and the late Stephn Sprous. He will be missed dearly, and the runway will always have one seat not filled correctly.

Ruttenstein has requested that donations be made to DIFFA, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, and the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, INC.

McQueen to Launch "McQ" Label

British Vogue reported today that designer Alexander McQueen is launching a new sister label for Fall/Winter 2006. The new label will be both for women and men and at an affordable price range of $49-$400. It will be carried in over 600 stores worldwide as well as online. This venture comes at a time when the House of McQueen is under pressure by the Gucci Group to create a profit. In September the designer launched his new shoe line with PUMA called "MANCAT". The shoe collection is expected to availble for sale early next year for Spring/Summer 2006. Some critics in industry are already commenting that this new clothing line could hurt McQueen and his image. Fingers crossed that they are wrong!

September 23, 2005

Great Find on Google Blog Search

I was hunting on the google blog search site for more info the ManCat line from Alexander Mcqueen. To my delight I came across a site were an artist is doing sketches of designer’s runway looks. Check it out. Here is a little sample; of coarse this is a McQueen gown. (Click on the image to go to the website)

Still no news on “MANCAT”

Wireimage has these press photos from the Puma press conference to release Alexander McQueen’s new shoe line “ManCat”. The press conference was this Monday, but still no one has reported on the release. My guess is that Puma has asked the press wait until a certain date to release and post photos. In the photos provided by Wireimage, Hilary Alexander is photographed at the release. I have scoured the Telegraph website and still nothing. Hopefully we hear more this weekend. I just hope the release date is not the day of his show next month in Paris.

Thanks wireimage

Alexander McQueen & Puma & KATE

I am dying to see them, Alexander McQueen hosted the launch of his new Puma shoe line at the London Club, SEOne Club last night. A couple news sites are posting quick bites on the party but no detail nor any photos of the new shoes. Even the blog world is empty with information. I’m dying here!

On a sour not, Alexander’s name is getting dragged in the mud. With Kate Moss being slaged for doing coke, it seems its open season on everyone in Fashion. Some idiot over the SUN published an article saying he hired a forensic scientist to test for drugs on the “loo” (toilet) at some famous fashion shows. What strikes me odd is he commented, “Six out of six samples taken at after-show parties for top designers including Versace and Alexander McQueen also tested positive.” Now anyone who’s anyone knows that both McQueen and Versace showed back in late June. Why all of a sudden are they reporting on something that happened 3 months ago? In my opinion, HEATHER BROWNE is a LIAR ! ! ! ! I think you owe two people an apology. Besides, when was the last time you tested all the “loo’s” in Buckingham?

D&G duo Dominico Dolce & Steffano Gabbana appear on the cover of next months Italian Vanity Fair. The Duo publicly acknowledges their split to the media earlier this year. Thank you Nan for a Great Party!

Best Wishes to Nan Kempner

Nan Kempner passed away last Sunday in NYC. A true fashion icon and pioneer for the talent we today call the masters of fashion. Her closet is filled with Museum worthy artifacts. I started reading about Nan back in the mid 80's through Town & Country and Vogue. She is great loss to the fashion world and the fashion world has lost it's biggest Couture Client. Best Wishes to her Family and her best friend Pat Buckley (pictured standing far left to Nan).

New York Social Diaryhas posted more photos and a remembrance.
